7/8 Baseball

T.J. Roberts kicked of the 7/8 baseball season in grand fashion with a leadoff homerun that landed 255 feet beyond the left field fence.  We followed T.J.'s lead by putting up six runs in the first inning before Green Vale ever came to the plate.  Matt Crockett made his first start and pitched well over four innings while striking out five.  We held an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the third inning, but Green Vale was able to capitalize on numerous Portledge fielding errors.  Green Vale took a 9-8 lead into the fourth inning.  Our bats rose to the occasion by driving in three runs late in the game, capped off by an RBI double by Mike Brushi to take the lead.  Crockett sent the Green Vale batters down in order in the fourth and set-up the save opportunity for T.J. in the final inning.  Green Vale threatened with a leadoff single in the final inning which brought the tying run to the plate.  T.J. kept his composure and sent the next three batters down in order, including two strike-outs.  With their first victory of the season under their belts the Portledge boys now look forward to their home opener next Wednesday, April 30th against SSDS.  Winning Pitcher, Matt Crockett; Save, T.J. Roberts

Off to a fine start.  At Piping Rock Portledge defeated LuHi 4 to 2, and Lawrence Woodmere 5 to 1.  Ray Weinmann posted a 1 under 34, with birdies on the 6th and 7th hole. With only one sub, we stood tall against East Woods ten member sub bench.  With her first time in goal Katharine Gahagan made 20 saves.  With 12 shots on goal, Martine Krown scored three; Ceci Mulry scored one; and Justine Boisits one.  Our awesome defense was led by Emma Chernoff.  It was a great first game victory!

Since our team is small this year we brought up four sixth graders to give us a bench of five.  We were down 6-1 at the half and came back to 11-9.  We played a great game.  Katharine Gahagan had 19 saves; Martine Krown had nine goals and Ceci Mulry two.  Justine Boisits, Laine Gahagan and Ceci helped with many assists.  We would not have done so well without our awesome defense led by Lisa Dourmashkin, Emma Chernoff and Isabella Muratore.  Thanks also goes to the following sixth graders who came up to play with us:  Carley Tsiames, Carolyn Sartori, Madeline Murray and Wendy Falourd. This was their first game of the season and they played great.  Thanks also goes to Coach Mulry and Coach Gahagan.

Boys Varsity Ice Hockey

Boys Ice Hockey has finished the first part of the early winter season at the mark of 1 and 5. This year's team is a talented, but young group that has undertaken a demanding schedule and to date performed quite admirably. The boys offensive play is led by senior captains Zach Lombardi and Dan Leavey as well as a core of underclassmen including freshman Steve DiBartolomeo, Thomas Parisi, and eighth graders Matt Crockett and Brendan McGovern. Austin Prey and Renny Kraft have also emerged as key contributors for the front line. Defensively the boys relay upon the physical play of Tim Morrison and smooth skating and puckhandling of Dave Wilson, Ryan Gottfried and Patrick Condon. The "glue" for the team is goaltender Sal Magliocco, who has sparkled during the first 6 games. There are a number of opportunities in January to come see the boys play on Monday nights at Beaver Dam.

Portledge overcame a 13-6 deficit to defeat Gren Vale 17-15 in overtime in the tam's first game of the season. Arielle Parris controlled the pace of the game from the point guard position, while the versatile Eve Shapiro led Porltedge's late scoring run to tie the game in regulation. Shapiro also knocked down two clutch free throws in overtime to put Portledge ahead for good. However, it was great team defense, led by Ceci Mulry and Justine Boisits, that won the game for Porltedge, which held a dangerous Green Vale team to only two fourth quarter points.
