Portledge alumna Tamara Simpson hit the game-winning layup for Yale

When Yale women’s basketball captain Sarah Halejian ’15 tore her ACL, putting her out of competition for the season, the Bulldogs despaired — but little did they know that guard Tamara Simpson ’18 would step up to the plate and help the Elis secure wins in their first two Ivy games.

The young guard came through in the clutch for Yale in its first game without Halejian, hitting the game-winning layup with 10 seconds left to beat Maine 57–55, and she has remained a fixture in the Bulldogs’ attack all season long.

“We knew right as she walked on campus that she had tremendous ability,” assistant coach Clare Fitzpatrick said. “She has a knack for the game and great basketball IQ.”

Simpson knew she wanted to play basketball at the collegiate level as early as elementary school. In high school at Portledge School in Locust Valley, New York, she accumulated over 2,000 career points and led the school to a championship win in her senior year.

Simpson credited much of her success in high school and at Yale to the great influences she had growing up, such as her siblings and teammates. At Portledge, several older classmates were on their way to the college level, and she saw herself following in their footsteps. Simpson said she was always focused on getting to the next level, taking advantage of opportunities and doing what she needed to do to succeed.

A Progress Report on the Strategic Plan

By Simon Owen-Williams
Head of School

January is a time for reflection on what happened in the past year and a time to set new goals with a fresh spirit. Goals not yet accomplished can be tackled with a rejuvenated approach after a lovely time with family, friends, and the perspective of time.

Some of Portledge's goals stretch deep into the future and therefore need our continued motivation. Our Strategic Plan remains our beacon of light and we are in the middle of crossing off some of the larger items on the list as completed.

As the re-enrollment season begins, may I remind you that contracts will be going out shortly. I certainly hope your child will be joining us for another year of exploration, discovery, and excellence. My door is always open to answer questions or discuss your concerns. Our community is a tight-knit one and this decision is monumental to many. We understand that you have a choice when it comes to the education of your child and we believe that Portledge provides one of the best independent school options in this area.

Another goal of the strategic plan is to attract talented individuals to work at Portledge. We have made clear progress in our personnel searches to fill the roles of College Counselor, Chief Financial Officer, and Lower School Division Head. Several candidates have been interviewed for these key administrative positions and we are pleased that each of the candidates offers a great deal of enthusiasm and experience. Our final choices will be made within the next month or so. Thank you to all the parents who have served on committees to meet these critical potential new members of our Portledge family.

Athletics formed a new task force to review the school athletic policy and Portledge's philosophical approach to athletics as well as to work on the handbook. We are making certain that this philosophy is in line with our mission statement. In addition, the task force is discussing the many definitions of "winning." It is not only the number on the scoreboard; it is also the inner "win" of each athlete we are training.

Another strategic goal under way is the growth in the theatre department. We have seen a wonderful productionof "Annie jr." directed by Deni Cavrell, "Once Upon A Mattress" expertly directed by Michael T. Schwartz, and anentertaining performance of "Putnam Spelling Bee" is in rehearsal under the direction of Jason Dula. These three productions demonstrate Portledge's commitment to theatre is alive and well. We hope that you will encourage your child to get involved in theatre arts to develop confidence, self-esteem, and compassion.

As a steward of Portledge School, I am committed to a year of positive and continued growth. Looking ahead to our Golden Anniversary Gala on March 7th, we must realize how much we have to celebrate and how fortunate we all are to be a part of this flourishing school community.
