Portledge in the Now.

National Hispanic Heritage Month

We celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 - October 15 in the United States to recognize the history and contributions of Americans with ancestors from Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Spain. At Portledge, we use this period of national recognition to acknowledge our students, faculty, administrators, and staff who identify as Hispanic and Latinx and to raise awareness through DEI programming inside and outside the classroom.
On Friday, September 13, Julienne Deverson '25, shared remarks regarding her Hispanic and Haitian identity, and the founders of the Music & Performance Club, Chloe Fuller '26, and Sebastian Reale '27, gave a presentation on Latin American music and provided a playlist for students to listen to the sounds of the instruments and artists that they discussed.

On Friday, September 20, the Spanish Language Honor Society led a short presentation regarding Hispanic heritage and culture and, this past Tuesday, September 17, Chantal Marcos '29, introduced Hispanic Heritage Month to her peers in the Middle School; members of the 7th-grade Spanish language classes sang a song in Spanish; and advisories competed in a Kahoot! that included important trivia related to the Latin American diaspora.

For the remainder of the heritage month, during the Middle School weekly town meetings, students who identify as Hispanic will share information about their families' countries of origin. The Lower School's annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will take place on Wednesday, October 9, and will be led by the 4th and 5th grade students in the Spanish language classes. Their presentation will include elements of their World Language curriculum and personal stories of students who identify as Hispanic and Latinx.
Our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations advance our mission to foster a warm, inclusive community and honor those within our community who help to shape our cultural diversity.
