Portledge students participate in Music and perform at every school level, beginning with classroom instruction and singing in Lower School. Instrumental lessons commence in fourth grade, and performance groups are formed in Middle School. Chorus, Concert Band, Jazz Combo, and Orchestra are offered in Middle and Upper School. Additional courses in music include Digital Music Production, Solo Repertoire Performance, Music Theory/Survey, and a rigorous two-year advanced IB Music Theory/Performance course. Student performances are highlighted on campus with winter and spring concerts. Off-campus, Lower, Middle, and Upper School musicians entertain in a variety of locations, from senior and rehabilitation centers to local arboretums.
At Portledge, Upper School students may participate in both performance and academic courses to help them earn the designation of Musical Arts Scholar upon graduation. The music department utilizes ProTools and Finale in the new Recording Studio along with the Mac Media Lab, and its teachers are members of NMEA (Nassau Music Educators Association), LISFA (Long Island String Festival Association) and NAfME (the National Association for Music Education), giving students access to NYSSMA, All-County, LISFA, All-State, and All-Eastern Festivals.
