Portledge in the Now.

Notes from Middle School

Middle School Orientation was a huge success, especially with the exciting news that the Athletic and Wellness Center would be ready for the start of school! The sixth and new seventh and eighth-grade entrants met their advisors, set up their laptops and myPortledge accounts, and enjoyed an informative session with a student panel. They also learned about the Portledge faculty and staff’s hidden talents - ask your children which of their teachers is a DJ, was a lifeguard who appeared on Sesame Street, was a clown in the Macy’s Day parade, or who recently ran a half marathon. In typical Portledge tradition, the students learned something new and experienced the positive vibe and communal feeling that defines Portledge.
The first few days of school were bubbling with excitement as students settled into their schedules, and teachers began working their magic of inspiring the students to learn new material and make connections between subjects. Teachers offered various study tips so students could try them out and see what works best for them. These study tips can also be found on myPortledge should you wish to support your child as they review material at home. These suggestions, combined with reviewing work daily and doing quality homework, will create a sense of academic pride. We stress in the Middle School that the goal is to understand, not memorize, material. Teachers also emphasized that checking MyPortledge daily will enable students to stay organized and foster a sense of ownership and independence.

At the forefront of our minds is enabling students to become responsible citizens of the world and to thoughtfully reflect upon their behaviors, responsibilities, and goals. Numerous articles and discussions have addressed the influence of social media, cell phones, and the overall need for responsible use of all technology. With that in mind, during extended advisory, the Advisors discussed and reviewed the Middle School Cell phone, Technology, and Social Media Policy. This lesson will be the first of several lessons addressing the responsible use of all technology in this ever-changing world.

The Middle School is off to a great start! We appreciate your support.
