EXPLORE Academics

Portledge School is excited to announce that we are officially a Candidate PYP School! The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an educational framework created by the International Baccalaureate (IB) organization for students aged 3 to 12. Portledge School chose the PYP program to provide a dynamic and globally recognized educational framework. Much like Portledge’s vision, PYP focuses on the development of the whole child. PYP fosters inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and a love for knowledge using a transdisciplinary, student-centered approach. By embracing this program, we ensure our students develop well-rounded skills, including creativity, problem-solving, and international-mindedness, preparing them for success in a diverse and ever-changing world.

PYP Spotlight

Over the past year, Portledge has made significant strides in implementing the PYP framework across all grade levels. From engaging transdisciplinary units to meaningful hands-on learning experiences, our teachers and students have embraced the principles of the PYP with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a passion for learning.

We've seen firsthand how the PYP has enriched our curriculum, deepened student engagement, and empowered our educators to create dynamic learning environments. Our students have excelled in demonstrating the PYP learner attributes as they explore and connect their learning across all subjects.

As we look forward to the upcoming verification visits next year, we are excited to showcase the progress we've made in implementing the PYP and our readiness to become an authorized PYP School. These visits will provide us with valuable feedback and insights that will further strengthen our PYP journey and enhance the educational experience we offer at Portledge School.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated educators, supportive parents, and enthusiastic students for their commitment to the PYP journey. Your collaboration, creativity, and perseverance have been instrumental in our success, and we are proud of the collective efforts that have brought us to this pivotal moment in our school's history.

Thank you for your ongoing support and enthusiasm for the PYP program. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students and our school!

  • The Learner Profile

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme established a list of ten learner attributes that are designed to foster well-rounded, global-minded learners. The ten Learner Profile attributes are:
    • Inquirers
    • Knowledgeable
    • Thinkers
    • Communicators
    • Principled
    • Open-Minded
    • Caring
    • Risk-Takers
    • Balanced
    • Reflective.
  • What Does It Mean to Be an Inquirer?

In the PYP, we believe in nurturing inquisitive minds. An inquirer is a student who demonstrates a natural curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. They are not afraid to ask questions and seek answers, always eager to explore the world around them.
  • Living It in Real Life

Encouraging our students to be inquirers isn't just about classroom learning; it's a way of life. At home, parents can support this attribute by:
    • Encouraging their child's questions and providing opportunities for exploration.
    • Visiting libraries, museums, and nature reserves to stimulate curiosity.
    • Engaging in conversations about current events and the world, fostering critical thinking.
By nurturing the inquirer within, we help our children become lifelong learners, constantly seeking to understand and make sense of the world.

We would love to hear how your child has exemplified this attribute at home! Please share your stories with PYP Coordinator, Colleen Burke at cburke@portledge.org to inspire our school community!
