Portledge in the Now.

Local Rivalry Recap

In a fast paced exciting hockey game, two local rivals, Portledge School and St. Anthony’s High School, went head-to-head Monday night at Beaver Dam Winter Sports Club. In the end, the victor was Portledge by a 7-2 margin over St. Anthony’s. The game was full of scoring in the first as the Friars came out strong scoring a short handed goal just minutes into the game. The Panthers had the answer in the form of a power play tally scored just seconds later by Vitally Levyy ‘21. The Portledge Boys were just getting going as Sophomore superstar Hunter Rossi  continued his hot streak, notching his first of 4 goals for the blue and white. When asked about the forward’s contributions thus far Coach Sandos told me, “I think Hunter is clearly one of our top guys. I also think that if you asked him he would say that the guys around him are a huge part of his success, so it’s nice to see some chemistry being built here in the first half of the season. He’s a talented hockey player, he’s smart, and his line is really going right now.” Part of this line includes Michael Stevens ‘20, who had three helpers on the evening. Stevens ‘20 told me, “You know Hunter is in the right place at the right time, and feeding him passes makes my job a whole lot easier as he constantly buries them.” Well, the boys went on to add a tally from Brandon Chabrier ‘20, padding their cushion on the scoreboard. Much of this can be credited to great goaltending by Vincent Salgado ‘19, who stopped 20 of 22 shots. Even in the victory, Salgado was displeased with his efforts tonight as he told me, “It’s mostly just the little things, I didn’t like the way that I was handling the puck, the way it was hitting me, that second goal was just like a scratch on a record, but I just had to bounce back.” Bounce back he did in front of over one hundred fans in attendance. Sandos remarked about Salgado ‘19, “I think overall, Vinny played really well, he wanted that second one back, and nobody is harder on Vinny than himself. Overall he was very solid and made a couple of great kick saves when the game was still up for grabs.” Well Portledge did grab the victory as they head into the Holiday break with a huge boost of confidence before facing an elite Albany Academy team following the vacation. When asked about the next contest Sandos told me, “I hope we learned some things and take them with us into the break because we play a very tough Albany team right out of the chute when we return.” Your final from Beaver Dam, Portledge 7 and St. Anthony’s 2.
