Portledge in the Now.

Portledge Victorious on Senior Night

It was Senior Night at the Dam on Monday as the Portledge Varsity Boys hockey team looked to remain hot against non-league opponent Bergen Catholic. The Panthers, behind a hat-trick from none other than Hunter Rossi ‘20, dominated play once again, cruising to a 7-2 victory. The celebration started early, as the team commemorated its’ Seniors in Charles Ritter, and Joseph Cortese. When asked about the significance of the night Ritter told me, “ It was a very important night for me, this night was very special, and I think the fact that I have been with the team for 4 years and loved every second of it really speaks volumes.” You can guarantee that whether Charlie is on the bench or out there in the action, a smile will be on his face. When I asked him about his fondest memory as a Panther, he told me almost immediately, “ My first year here I never played, but I was part of the first team here to win the MAHL, which was incredible.” Charlie’s team first attitude and selfless play is so unique to the sport and will certainly be missed in the years to come.

As we move to the action, and within 5 minutes of play, Portledge found their way on the board with an absolute highlight reel goal from Sophomore standout, Hunter Rossi ‘20. His line would continue to have success as it registered for 5 of the 7 goals, two more of which were Rossi’s. When asked about the hat trick Hunter told me, “ I certainly couldn’t have done that without my linemate Jeremy (Wilmer ‘21), he dishes me such great passes, and I think the chemistry we have formed this season is almost untouchable.” Hunter continued to be unselfish as he commented on his defenders saying, “It’s huge to have those guys back there that you know will get your back if you make a mistake on the ice. Luckily, Joey (Scabara ‘21) got to add a goal and maybe others will find the back of the net soon.” One defender, Gavin McDonald ‘21 leaves everything he’s got on the ice game after game. When I met up with him after the game he talked to me about his role on the team as he added, “ You’re right, I’m not a goal scorer but I am that one under the radar guy that all teams need. You know I get to the dirty areas and try to figure out how to benefit my team. Winning comes way before my individual achievements.” Wilmer, Sciabarra, Staino, and Evans would add goals in the game as Ford Matthews ‘21, would collect his first two points as a Panther, and Justin Porrino ‘21 remained solid between the pipes registering 19 saves on the night.  When asked about the hopes for the rest of the season, Rossi, Ritter, McDonald, and head coach Pasko Skarica all answered, “ We want to win the MAHL.” The final from Beaver Dam, Portledge 7 and Bergen Catholic 2.
