Portledge Hockey Continues Undefeated Season

Jonah Hirschwerk '20 & Athletic Department
Monday night was a game for opportunities against Columbia Grammar Preparatory School. And on their home ice, the Portledge Boys Varsity Hockey team made the most of what they were given and then some, handing Columbia Prep a 9-0 loss.
It didn’t take long for the boys to get rolling as Nolan Ort ’20 notched his first goal of the season just 2 minutes into the first frame. That shot was the first of, yes, 57 shots on the game. At the end of the first period the score remained 1-0. However, the flood gates broke open just seconds into the second period as newcomer Dylan Newitz ’20 added his first tally of the season. From then on, there was no stopping the Panthers as the boys added four more goals in the period thanks to Spencer Hazen ’19, Frankie D’Ancona ’22, and a second from Ort ’20. Ort ‘20 would come close to a hat trick as he ripped a shot that found iron instead of netting later in the third.

Well, five goals didn’t satisfy the Panthers as they would add another four in the third period. These goals came from Mikey Stevens ’20, who went bar-down for his first of the year, Odin Ford’ 22, who dazzled us all with a beautiful move as he walked in on net for his first goal of the year and on the Varsity team, and defensemen Joseph Sciabarra ‘21, who had himself a night when it came to puck possession and movement, also put one on the scoreboard. The ninth and final goal came on the power-play as Steven Lohan ’22 got his first as a Panther on the Varsity team. Throughout the night, assists came from D’Ancona ‘23 who had two, George Anderson ‘20, M. Stevens ‘20, Sciabarra ‘21, Newitz ‘20, Ort ‘20, and Trent Midura ‘22. Vincent Salgado ‘19 was perfect between the pipes stopping everything he faced.

After the game, coach Pasko Skarica gave his thoughts on the boys’ play, “It was a great game for the guys. We put a lot of guys at new positions but most importantly, we got the win.” It was definitely a good win but for the boys it’s not their last task of the week. On Wednesday, the Portledge Panthers will face off against the Panthers of Princeton Day School in a crucial game with serious MAHL implications. That game will be at 3:15 at the Northwell Ice Arena at Eisenhower Park. Once again, the final from Beaver Dam on Monday night, Portledge 9 and Columbia Prep 0.
