Boys Hockey Falls to PDS in First MAHL Game of the Season

Jonah Hirschwerk '20 & Athletic Department
The Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park was home to a fantastic matchup between the Portledge Varsity Boys hockey team and their league foe, Princeton Day School.
Wednesday was also the first game that the Panthers of Portledge would lose. In this critical game, with serious MAHL implications, the boys fell victim to the Panthers of PDS, the final being 3-1 in favor of PDS. The first two periods were relatively calm as both goalies especially Portledge net-minder, Vincent Salgado ‘19, fought off a couple of great chances. On the attack, puck possession was most certainly in favor of Portledge but the shots didn’t prove that. Coach Jon Sandos ‘03 put a lot of emphasis on the lack of shots the boys took. He seemed to be pleased with the zone time that the first line, consisting of Wilmer ‘21, Rossi ‘20, and Avezov ‘20, created. However, it was the opportunities or lack thereof that the team declined to throw to the net, which didn’t please the coaching staff.

After two periods of play, the boys were able to start building momentum after they drew a penalty. And just like that Portledge found themselves up a goal. The tally was courtesy of Vitaly Levyy ‘21 who wrapped around the net and put it past the PDS goalie. The goal came at the 3:29 mark in the third period. Time ticked all the way down to under four minutes and then things turned sour for Portledge. With 3 minutes and change left in the game, the boys had a defensive turnover which led to an easy goal for PDS. Just seconds later, during another long stretch of offensive zone time for PDS, a shot led to a rebound which put Portledge in a 2-1 hole. That second goal was all PDS needed. To add insult to injury, PDS added an empty net goal with 18 ticks left to add the cherry on top. Portledge would have 1 goal on 20 shots while PDS registered 2 goals on 27 shots.

For Portledge, it is their first league game they have lost and with not many MAHL games remaining, every minute will count. On Wednesday, they will play 51 minutes in another crucial game against MAHL juggernaut The Hill School. The final from Eisenhower Park, Princeton Day School 3 and the Portledge Panthers 1.
