Welcome back to the Portledge PYP Corner! As we embark on a new school year, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the incredible learning experiences that lie ahead. This year is particularly special as we continue to make significant strides in our journey with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepare for our upcoming verification visits.
*Reflecting on Our PYP Progress*
Last year, our school community embraced the PYP framework with enthusiasm and dedication. We witnessed our students engage in inquiry-based learning, develop essential skills, and grow as thoughtful, principled, and globally-minded individuals. The progress we’ve made is a testament to the hard work of our teachers, the support of our parents, and the curiosity of our students.
*What is the PYP?*
For those who are new to our school or the PYP, here’s a brief overview. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an internationally recognized educational framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child, not just in the classroom but in the world beyond.
The PYP is structured around six transdisciplinary themes that guide our learning:
Who We Are: Exploring the nature of self, beliefs, and values, and what it means to be human.
How We Organize Ourselves: Examining the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities.
How the World Works: Exploring the natural world and its laws, the interaction between people and the environment, and the use of technology.
Sharing the Planet: Investigating rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and living things.
Where We Are in Place and Time: Investigating personal histories, homes and journeys, and the discoveries that have shaped our world.
How We Express Ourselves: Delving into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, and culture.
These themes allow students to make connections across subjects, fostering a deeper understanding of complex issues and encouraging them to think critically and act responsibly.
*Looking Ahead*
As we begin this new school year, we are eager to continue our PYP journey with renewed energy and purpose. Our focus this year will be on refining our practices, deepening our understanding of the PYP principles, and showcasing our readiness during the verification visits. These visits will be an opportunity for us to demonstrate the high-quality education we are providing and to receive valuable feedback as we strive to become an authorized IB World School. We look forward to the opportunities for growth, collaboration, and innovation that the PYP brings to our school. Together, we will continue to cultivate a learning environment that nurtures our students' curiosity, resilience, and passion for making a positive impact in the world.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the PYP program. Here’s to a year of discovery, reflection, and meaningful learning experiences!
