Welcome back to the Portledge PYP Corner! The Lower School has been buzzing with activity! The level of hard work and collaboration displayed by our students and teachers has been nothing short of remarkable. From hands-on projects to creative problem-solving, everyone has come together to showcase the true spirit of the PYP!
Wrapping Up Theme 2 “How We Organize Ourselves”
Over the past few weeks, our students have been deeply engaged in exploring the theme "How We Organize Ourselves." As we wrap up our second theme, our students have gained a deeper understanding of the systems, structures, and collaboration that are required to make communities thrive. Through inquiry and exploration, they’ve uncovered the importance of cooperation and the roles individuals play in ensuring that societies function effectively.
Looking Ahead to Theme 3 “How The World Works”
We are excited to begin our next PYP theme, "How The World Works." This theme will spark curiosity about the natural world, scientific principles, and the way humans use their understanding of these concepts to innovate and solve problems. From exploring forces and motion to understanding the environment, students will engage in hands-on learning that connects their studies to the real world.
Supporting the “How The World Works” Theme at Home
As we begin this theme, there are many ways families can extend learning at home. Some ways include:
Exploring Science Together: Visit a local science museum, planetarium, or nature center to spark curiosity about the world.
Experiment at Home: Engage in simple experiments, like building a paper airplane to explore motion or growing a plant to learn about nature.
Connect to Daily Life: Point out real-world applications of science and technology, such as how weather forecasts work or how machines function.
Encourage Questions: Foster a sense of wonder by encouraging your child to ask "why" and "how" about the world around them—and explore the answers together!
PYP Spotlight: The Magical Fourth Graders
Our fourth graders deserve a huge round of applause for their outstanding work during their STEAM Event and State Fair! Combining the theme of tourism with physics, they created magical projects that amazed their audience. Students used creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork to develop exhibits such as magnetic levitating cars, roller coaster designs, and even simulations of natural disaster protection. Their hard work and ingenuity truly exemplify what it means to be risk-takers and inquirers.
Thank you!
We’re excited for the discoveries ahead as we explore the wonders of science, technology, and the environment. Thank you for your ongoing support of the PYP!
