Portledge in the Now.

Recap

Hello Portledge fans. My name is Jonah Hirschwerk and I'm a 9th grader at Portledge. I look to pursue a career of sports broadcasting and journalism so I've decided to create a blog for Portledge sports. To start the season, and my blog, we go to Portledge’s highly anticipated opening day of  Ice Hockey. The boys, led by coach Jon Sandos, have high hopes for this year,, "Our goals are pretty high this year. Our goal is to win the league championship." stated coached Sandos in a pre-season interview. Sandos would go on to talk about the rising youth factor that the boys have. "I am excited to see that blend of youth and for our veterans to take the younger guys under their wings.”  Well, they would have their hands full to enter the season against local rival Chaminade. Last time these 2 teams met, the Panthers were upset in a shootout by the Flyers. This time thing were different, as Nick Mauriello would get Portledge on the board in the early moments of the 2nd period. Chaminade would soon have the answer with their first goal. From that point on it would then be the Panthers taking control of the game with goals from Ross Mitton, Max Willard, and from freshman Spence Evans.  I spoke with Evans after the game about his goal. He said “It’s a big rivalry. You're just trying to get the goals to win the game.” Centerman Ross Mitton had a beautiful goal with a beautiful assist from Freshman Brandon Chabrier. When asked about the production of younger talent, Mitton replied, “It’s real important to get the chemistry going. I mean chemistry wins hockey games.” Portledge would cruise to a 5-2 win over their rival. The fans who came out were very appreciative that ‘Ledge gave it their all in the freezing weather. Goalie Anthony Porrino saved 23 of 25 shots and when talking to him about the game he told me, “It means everything to have all the fans here at Beaver Dam it really gets the atmosphere going.” He would go on to say, “I know my boys got my back. I know they are there for me.’’ Getting his back they did, as the Panthers always played with their pedal to the metal. Coach Jon Sandos told me that the biggest takeaway from the win was, “The work ethic.  We definitely have a group of guys who are willing to work hard and are really committed to battling and competing.” The boys head to New Jersey for another rivalry game on Tuesday. Stay tuned for more Panther athletics and have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
