Jeremy R.’25 Earns Gold at Long Island Math Fair

Jeremy R.’25
I participated in the Long Island Mathematics Fair at Hofstra University on April 5, 2024, as a member of the Institute of Creative Problem Solving, ICPS. My paper was titled An Investigation of the Catalan Number Sequence and its Relationship with Pascal’s Triangle. The purpose was to examine the Catalan Numbers sequence, attempt to model the sequence both recursively and explicitly, and explore relationships between the Catalan Numbers and Pascal’s Triangle. I began writing my research paper in September through the Institute of Creative Problem Solving, with the guidance of my mentor, Dr. Gerver. The paper was an exploration of my own research, and I was able to successfully prove a recursive formula, an explicit formula, and three separate relationships between the Catalan Numbers and Pascal’s Triangle. After completing and submitting my paper, I created a fifteen-minute presentation about my paper. My judges and the other students really enjoyed my research and I won a gold medal for my work. It was a very rewarding experience to participate in the Long Island Math Fair this year and I look forward to continuing my research in mathematics in the future.
