Portledge Community Service Clubs Shine Beyond Portledge
by Eden White
This year, the structure for starting and participating in an Upper School Club was changed to provide a more meaningful experience for students. And so far, our students have far exceeded our expectations!
This year, the Portledge Community Service Clubs have truly outdone themselves, showcasing a passion for giving back that inspires us all. With an impressive array of new partnership initiatives, the clubs have forged meaningful connections with organizations like NOSH, the Locust Valley Beautification Committee, Momma’s House, and the Arena-Sass Foundation. Their efforts have gone beyond our campus, creating ripples of positive impact that extend into the local community and beyond.
Our club leaders have elevated their leadership skills to new heights, from bake sales to volunteering and “learning how to volunteer” events and beautification projects. Lachlan Vogel, a tenth grader who drummed up community support to create our general Community Service Club, says, “It’s important to get our school involved in the community. I feel that I’m able to provide that opportunity because of my connection and previous dedication to NOSH”.
The students’ creative and compassionate approach has fostered an atmosphere where service isn’t just encouraged—it’s celebrated. Their motto, “Community service is cool,” resonates throughout Portledge, setting an example of how acts of kindness can transform communities.
Notable initiatives this year include fundraising by the Asian Student Association and the impactful efforts of the AMIGOS club and advanced Spanish 3A class. AMIGOS, run by sophomore Valentina Lopez, joined forces with Mrs. Stefanopoulus’ 3A Level Spanish class to raise awareness and support for victims of the devastating Valencia floods, demonstrating a global mindset and steadfast show of empathy.
The dedication and ingenuity of the Community Service Clubs are a testament to the character and values of Portledge students. They’ve shown that true leadership is rooted in service by spreading love, support, and assistance. As we reflect on their achievements, we are reminded of the power of collaboration and the boundless potential of young leaders who care deeply about the world around them. Bravo to our Community Service Clubs for making a difference, one initiative at a time.
