Support, Strategy, & Success: How Portledge College Counseling Helped Me Get into My Top Choice
By Jeremy R. ’25
The Early Decision College Process was a rewarding experience in which I was able to achieve all that I hoped for during the college process. Although I filled out my application during the fall of my senior year, the process began during the middle of my junior year when I had my initial meeting with the college counseling team.
The Early Decision College Process was a rewarding experience in which I was able to achieve all that I hoped for during the college process. Although I filled out my application during the fall of my senior year, the process began during the middle of my junior year when I had my initial meeting with the college counseling team.
During the meeting, I discussed my initial feelings about the college process and my general sentiments about which kinds of schools I would be interested in. The following discussions then centered around my thoughts about my college major, whether I would be interested in universities or liberal arts colleges, and my preferred size of institution. After realizing that I wanted to explore neuroscience in a research-based manner, my college counselor and I concluded that I would best succeed at a smaller liberal arts institution.
During my subsequent research, I became interested in Williams College, the top liberal arts college in the nation, because they offered the opportunity to engage in the depth and breadth of knowledge that hands-on research requires very early on in my college career. It became clear to me that I would prefer to attend Williams College over any other school, and I shared this with my college counselor during the first meeting of my senior year. My college counselor and I subsequently decided that Early Decision would be the ideal choice for me because I knew that Williams was my number one choice.
Once I had chosen to pursue the Early Decision path, I needed to fill out my application as soon as possible, as the Williams Early Decision application was due by November 15th. However, my college counselors gave me the support necessary to fill out my application within the given timeframe and ensured that all of my letters of recommendation were uploaded well before the deadline. It was also necessary to sign an Early Decision agreement with Williams College, which stated that I would attend Williams if my application were accepted.
Through the support of the college team, I completed and submitted my application to Williams by the middle of October, enabling me to have plenty of time to ensure that all parts of my application were received by Williams. I found out that my Williams Early Decision result would be released in mid-December, and although I was hoping for the best result, my college counselor and I had a regular decision plan that would also allow me to succeed. When Williams College released my decision, I was incredibly excited and grateful to see that I got accepted to Williams through Early Decision.
I am deeply thankful to the Portledge College Counseling Team for supporting me during the Early Decision process and putting me in a position where I could succeed. I am excited to use what I have learned at Portledge as I move into the next chapter of my academic journey.
